Investigators with the Racine Fire Department are looking into what caused an afternoon fire at a home in the 2500 block of Gilson St.

Neighbors spotted smoke and called 911 because the residents were not home. When firefighters arrived on scene, flames were visible from outside the home.

The kitchen of the home suffered the most damage, but the second floor of the home was also affected, a press release from RFD Lt. Scott Sorce.

Firefighters had the fire out in a matter of minutes, and turned the home over to the owners.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Total damages come to an estimated $51,000; $45,000 for the building and $6,000 for the belongings.
