Wisconsin residents are pretty good about playing the various lottery games offered here, but need to work on actually collecting their money when they win.

More than $2 million went unclaimed in 2014, a story from The Associated Press reads, and a total of $57 million has gone uncollected since the statewide lottery started in 1997.

Specifically, $2,230,267 in winnings are not yet assigned to anyone from the fiscal year that ended June 30, the story continues. The total does not include amounts won through scratch-off games but does add up from the big-name drawings Powerball, Mega Millions, Megabucks, and Supercash as well as Badger 5, Pick 3 and Pick 4.

But, the money isn’t just sitting there. Instead, property owners will see decreases in their annual tax bills through the state’s gaming credit.

The prevailing theory is that winners are unaware they’ve hit it big because their tickets are either lost or were thrown away by mistake.
