Racine police say a 25-year-old Milwaukee man is facing felony drug charges after he had six bags of marijuana shipped through the mail from Colorado.

Daniel Goldberg, formerly of Caledonia, had his initial appearance adjourned on a single count of felony possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver. He was in court Wednesday, but did not have a lawyer so he will be officially charged August 26 instead.

If convicted, Goldberg faces up to six years in prison and/or up to $10,000 in prison.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called July 14 by a postal inspector at the 4-Mile and Douglas USPS location about a package from Colorado that smelled like marijuana and was addressed to Goldberg as his Caledonia address. The package was delivered to RAPD on July 15 for inspection.

Police say they placed the package in a kind of lineup to see if K9 Dozer could identify any drugs among the boxes. The dog signaled the presence of drugs in the package addressed to Goldberg who had already called the post office looking for his box.

At 11:30 a.m. on July 15, Goldberg did go to the post office to pick up his package and was seen leaving in a white pick-up truck, the complaint reads, and placing the box in a side tool box. Officers conducted a traffic stop on Goldberg and searched his person. He admitted he had a handgun on him and that it was permitted.

Officers say they did remove a gun from Goldberg’s rear waistband and then searched the truck. They removed the box Goldberg picked up from the post office and found a backpack containing a digital scale, pipe, marijuana grinder, an empty jar, a knife and a prescription bottle with with over-the-counter pills. A more involved search turned up several burnt “roaches.”

Inside the package investigators found six bags of marijuana that tested positive and weighed over 271 grams.

While marijuana is legal in Colorado, it is not in Wisconsin, and it is illegal to ship drugs across state lines.

Online records indicate that the complaint against Goldberg was filed August 6, and his initial appearance was originally scheduled for Wednesday.
