UPDATE: The Racine Unified School District Board of Education approved the expenditure request at a meeting held Thursday, Aug. 21 to knock down Caddy Vista Elementary School. An employee at Azarian Wrecking LLC said the building will likely come down in about three weeks after they remove the asbestos.
ORIGINAL STORY: The Caddy Vista Elementary School has sat empty since 1998 and has largely served as a storage facility, but soon the entire building will be demolished.
The Board of Education was supposed to approve the demolition plan at its meeting Monday, but because the school board didn’t have enough members present to have a quorum the issue will have to wait until its next meeting. The demolition proposal includes site excavation, demolition, asbestos abatement and site restoration. Constructed in 1956, the building had several additions in the 1960s and 1970s.
Azarian Wrecking LLC is recommended to do the work for $320,107, but the work still needs to be approved by the school board to move forward. School board president Melvin Hargrove said the district decided to demo the building because it would have been too costly to upgrade. Located off of Caddy Lane in the far northeastern part of the school district, the Racine Unified school board hasn’t made a decision on whether the district will sell the property or keep the property to build on at a later date.
