Racine police say Joshua Ammon was terrorizing his girlfriend because she left him after two domestic violence incidents between them. He was apprehended Saturday near the store where the woman works.

Ammon, 30, of Kenosha, was charged Monday in Racine County Circuit Court with one felony each of stalking, resisting arrest Joshua Ammonand intimidating a witness through threat of force. He is also facing one misdemeanor count each of harassment-fear of death, obstruction and disorderly conduct. If convicted, he faces up to 21-1/3 years in prison and/or up to $66,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called August 14 to a store in West Racine to take a complaint from the business owner and a female employee who said Ammon had called the store at least 27 times before 9 a.m. and would hang up when the owner would answer and not allow Ammon to speak to the woman. While officers were present, Ammon called another five to 10 times.

Police say the woman said she’d been in a relationship with Ammon but left after a second violent incident on August 14. The first episode was on July 10, and the woman said she did call police to file a battery report which angered Ammon. Officers were also called after the second incident, but Ammon was not located.

The woman left their shared home the morning of August 14 and Ammon immediately began contacting her by calling and sending numerous text messages that threatened the woman’s safety and that of her belongings in her home. One of the messages references the woman calling police, the complaint reads, but that Ammon can get to her anyway because, “they can’t alway attend to u 24-7 just letting u know.”

Officers say the woman told them she feared for her life, telling them that Ammon would kill her when he found out she’d made another report against him.

Police received information Saturday that Ammon was going to be at the store in West Racine. Kenosha police informed RAPD that Ammon had two felony warrants for his arrest and that he had run from police on previous occasions, the complaint reads. Officers observed Ammon’s vehicle leave a parking lot near the store and begin traveling eastbound on Washington Avenue so they initiated a traffic stop.

Ammon pulled over but almost immediately took off running west down Washington Avenue. Officers say they caught up to Ammon a couple of blocks away, and he immediately turned combative. Additional officers responded and attempted to subdue Ammon to no effect. A taser was deployed but also had no effect on the defendant.

Because Ammon continued to resist arrest, he was warned that K9 Officer Odin would bite him but the defendant still resisted, the complaint reads. When Ammon continued to resist arrest, Odin bit him in the right thigh, and Ammon surrendered without further incident.

During the struggle to arrest Ammon, one of the officer suffered minor injuries to their knee, hand and forehead, police say.

Ammon remains in the Racine County Jail on a $15,000 cash bail. He will next be in court Sept. 2 for his preliminary hearing.
