School starts next week, and that means school buses will be out and about at least three times a day transporting students to and from their schools.

To help keep kids safe, the Racine County Sheriff’s Department posted on the their Facebook page Tuesday an easy reference graphic for drivers who may not know or who need a reminder about the rules motorists are required by law to follow when they encounter a school bus with flashing lights.

In a nutshell, all cars must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus.

Here’s how it breaks down:

Two-lane road: Traffic in both directions must stop.

Multi-lane road: Even with a divided turn lane in the middle, traffic in both directions must stop.

Divided highway (median): Only traffic behind the bus is required to stop.
