Officials with Racine Unified say a student at Knapp Elementary School missed almost 40 days of school last year.
Elizabeth Gomez, 43, was charged Tuesday in Racine County Circuit Court with seven counts of misdemeanor failure to send a child to school. Each count includes multiple days of school missed, and she faces up to 21 months in prison and/or up to $7,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, RUSD reported Gomez to the Racine County District Attorney’s office after they were unable to work successfully with her about sending her child to school regularly.
Gomez was assigned a $500 signature bond at her initial appearance Tuesday, and she remained in the Racine County Jail as of Tuesday evening. Gomez will next be in court September 24 for a pre-trial conference.
Editor’s note: the amount of the fine was changed to show the correct amount of jail time and fines. Racine County Eye regrets making the error.
