Summer may be winding down, but there is still plenty to do in Racine County. You can visit a Vietnam War memorial, catch some live music, see championship football and enjoy an all-day fiesta. Come along with Real Racine!
History pays a visit. The Moving Wall, a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial, visits Racine starting at noon on Thursday. This traveling museum, presented by the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 767 and Real Racine, will be open around-the-clock until 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31 at Pritchard Park, 2500 Ohio St. A motorcycle ride to the wall, including local Medal of Honor recipient Gary Wetzel, is at 4 p.m. Friday. The opening ceremony, starting at 5 p.m., features color guards, the U.S. Navy Band and the reading of names of the Racine County service members whose names appear on the memorial. The closing ceremony starts at 3 p.m. Sunday. It will be preceded by a K-9 demonstration with comments by George Miller, a canine handler in Vietnam.
Summer Pops and Zachary. The Racine Symphony Orchestra (RSO) Summer Pops concert, called “Pops Potpourri,” has a little of everything. The program includes music from The Muppets, Stevie Wonder, Leroy Anderson and Franz von Suppe. Guest artist is composer-guitarist Zachary Scot Johnson. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; concert starts at 7 p.m. Friday at Festival Hall, 5 Fifth St. General admission is $23 in advance; $25 at the door. Reserved table seating is $32.50. Ready for some football? Racine’s hometown team – the Racine Raiders – are playing for the Mid-States Football League (MSFL) Northern Conference championship on Saturday at Horlick Field, 1648 N. Memorial Drive. The Raiders (10-2) will host the Door County Destroyers. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. The famous Kilties drum and bugle corps will perform at halftime. Details at www.racineraiders.com
Dance, dance, dance. Four bands, horseshoes, a dunk tank, kids games, a corn roast and much more is in store at the first-ever Hiawatha Street Dance from 1 to 11 p.m. Saturday. It all takes place outside 9809 Durand Ave. in Sturtevant. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Sturtevant Fireworks Fund.
Fiesta time. Make a day of it on Sunday at La Fiesta Mexicana. This family-oriented celebration includes Mexican food, live Tejano and mariachi bands, folkloric dancers, kids play area, bingo and raffles. The fiesta runs from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Caledonia-Mount Pleasant Memorial Park, 9614 Hwy K, Franksville. Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the gate for adults. Kids, ages 6 to 12, are $5. Kids ages 5 and younger get in free. It’s sponsored by the Urban League of Racine and Kenosha.
