Rumors have been circulating for weeks that Walmart Inc. was interested in buying the former Pick’N Save store on Rapids Drive, but those rumors are untrue, said an official with NDC LLC.
Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc., which owned the Pick’n Save store at 2210 Rapids Drive, shut their doors on June 27.
Racine County Eye readers said they had heard that Walmart was looking at buying the property. Owners of Yellow Ginger said they had heard the same thing and an employee at Flex Gym said he jokingly said that Walmart should buy the property. The two businesses occupy the same strip mall that the Pick’n Save store was located.
An official with NDC LLC, the company that manages the property, also said last week that Walmart isn’t in negotiations with them to buy the property. However, they would be interested in discussing the possibility.
Walmart also denied having a pending deal.
“While we are always looking for opportunities to better serve our Racine customers, we don’t have any new stores to announce at this time,” said a media spokesperson with Walmart.
Racine Mayor Dickert said he had heard the same rumor, but he was unaware of any discussions happening with the city. Dickert has said that he still wants to see a grocery store there because he doesn’t want to see a food desert in the area.
“I don’t want to pick winners and losers, I just want a grocery store there,” Dickert said.
