Racine police and fire rescue around 4 p.m. Monday responded to the corner of 6th Street and Memorial Drive for a pedestrian vs car accident.

Scanner chatter indicated one person was struck by a gold Chevy Impala and was critically injured.

Officers had Memorial Drive between 6th and 9th Streets shut down during busy rush hour traffic but the roadway was cleared for traffic by 8 p.m.

Dree Williams lives in the area, and she told Racine County Scanner that she heard the accident when it happened.

“It happened right in front of my apartment. It was bad, very bad!” she posted. “I’m honestly surprised that she was alive. I heard the thud of impact (and) seriously thought it sounded like a car running into the dumpster so ignored it until I heard her husband yelling, ‘Help me, help me.'”

Williams also said that intersection is getting increasingly dangerous despite the traffic lights and clearly marked crosswalks.

“This isn’t the first time this has happened at this intersection. Our neighbor was victim to the exact same thing around a year or two ago now. This is one of the worst intersections in this area of town,” she added.
