More than 200 people raised over $1,400 Sunday at a pancake breakfast for a feasibility study that will determine whether or not Caledonia can support its own school district.
Organizers put the event together to continue pushing for an independent school district study separate from a joint study with the Villages of Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant.
That study’s parameters are being determined by an ad hoc committee featuring two trustees from each village because while residents in Caledonia approved a referendum in April to explore a new school district, board members would not approve going forward with the study.
Sturtevant trustees are prepared to budget for a study in 2016 or to help fund a joint study this year depending on cost.
Madison legislators have told local lawmakers they needed a “yes” vote on the referendum before introducing a bill to change the way unified school districts and both formed and dissolved. Currently, the school board of the prevailing district casts the final vote, and independent school district supporters want residents to vote on it in a referendum.
