Mount Pleasant police say a 42-year-old man was drunk Thursday when he used a bow to shoot an arrow too close for comfort near neighbors in his apartment complex.
Jamie Vogel, of Mount Pleasant, was charged Friday in Racine County Circuit Court with one misdemeanor 
count each of disorderly conduct and negligent handling of a weapon. If convicted, he faces up to a year in prison and/or up to $11,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, police were called at 6 p.m. Thursday to the apartments at 16th Street and Emmertsen Road for a report of a man who shot an arrow toward a small group of people, including a child. A man directed officers toward a patio where they could see a man – later identified as Vogel – peeking outside. He came outside with his hands up and told police his bow and arrows were inside on a table.
Officers say they went inside and spoke to a woman who said Vogel is unemployed and depressed and has been known to yell about nothing when he’s drunk. When he took out his bow and arrow, the woman said she didn’t think anything serious was going down until she heard people screaming. Vogel came back inside and said the police would be coming soon and that he was “going out with a bang,” the woman didn’t know if that meant Vogel wanted to commit suicide by cop.
A man and a woman who were helping a friend and their child move into their apartment told police they saw Vogel on his patio with his bow and arrow aim toward them before releasing the arrow, the complaint reads. The man said the arrow struck a fence approximately 10 feet away. He yelled for his wife and the child to jump into the truck, he got in after them and dialed 911 while he drove away.
Police say they located the arrow stuck in the bottom lip of a nearby garage door and removed it. There was no visible damage to the door.
Vogel apologized repeatedly for shooting the arrow and said he wasn’t sure why he’d do anything so stupid, the complaint reads.
He remains in the Racine County Jail on a $150 cash bond with orders that he not possess any weapons. Vogel will next be in jail Sept. 24 for a pre-trial conference.
