At least one person is homeless after a Monday afternoon fire in their garage.
The Racine Fire Department Monday at 4:35 p.m. Monday afternoon responded to calls about a fire in a condominium complex near the Horlick Dam.
Racine Fire Lt. Michael Moss said in a written release that the fire started in the garage of a unit in the 2700 block of Old Mill Road and spread into the condominium unit. Estimated damages come in at $75,000 to the structure, $20,000 to the belongings inside and $1,000 to the car.
“Firefighters extinguished the fire quickly, shut off the power to both the home and garage,” he said.
Video shot by Racine County Eye reader Thom Petersen clearly depicts visible flames on the roof of the garage, and there is heavy smoke as well.
No one was injured, and the condo’s resident was able to escape unharmed and was waiting for relatives. The home is uninhabitable at this time, in part because WE Energies will not reconnect utilities at this time.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. A total of eight units responded: Engine 1, Engine 2, Quint 3, Truck 1, Med 3, Med 1, Battalion 1, and Car 2, Petersen posted on the Racine County Eye Facebook page.
Officers from the Racine Police Department also responded to the scene.
