Legislation designed to give every Racine Unified community a voice on the Board of Education sparked the creation of a new committee that got to work for the first time Tuesday.
The seven-member committee consists of three current board members; Melvin Hargrove, Mike Frontier, and Charles Goodremote, David Hazen, district finance director, the district’s attorney and two members of the community.
Hargrove established the committee after Madison legislators added to the state budget a measure that puts all BOE seats up for grabs in April and requires representation from nine new, equal districts in order to give the Villages of Caledonia, Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant a place at the table.
The committee agreed to meet every Tuesday in September in order to give a plan to the full board in October, a story in The Journal Times reads.
With a total population of about 139,000, each new district will have around 15,400 people, the story continues. Some boundaries will cross municipal lines in order to create districts that are as equal as possible.
The next committee meeting is at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Racine Unified Administration Building, 3109 Mount Pleasant Street.
