Sturtevant trustees are considering the creation of an off-leash dog park, and while a grand opening is still a long way off, board members are starting to talk about possible locations and costs.
The new park falls under the purview of Trustee Carrie Harbach’s parks committee, and she said there are a number of areas of the village that could work if the price is right. Primary concerns include the amount of chain link fencing that would be needed and planning for enough space to have separation between small and large dogs.
“A four-foot chain link fence is the greatest concern regarding expense,” she said. “The village engineer will research pricing, and further discussion will take place regarding size, expense, and the park having a small dog/large dog separation.”
Initial suggestions for where the park could go including the south end of the last pond at Hiawatha Crossing; near Fireman’s Park by the big hill; or somewhere in the Renaissance Business Park.
The discussion Tuesday was the first of what will be many.
“This is just starting,” Village President Steve Jansen said. “But, if we do one, we want to do it right and make it user-friendly.”
