Community celebrations, a taste of history and on-stage comedies are in the works all over Racine County this weekend. Real Racine has these suggestions.
Like it was. If you’ve ever wanted to show your kids or grandkids what farming used to be like, the 24th Annual Fall Harvest Days is the place to go. This event is at the Racine County Fairgrounds, 19805 Durand Ave., Union Grove, this Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You’ll see antique tractors, steam engines, farm life demonstrations, kids activities and great food, including home-made pies. There is a tractor pull Friday evening, lawn mower races on Saturday and garden tractor pulls on Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults. Kids ages 11 and younger get in free. Celebrating community. Two community celebrations are planned for Saturday. The first-ever Mount Pleasant Day is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Civic Campus, 8811 Campus Drive. Village organizers are planning a block party-type, family-oriented event that will include a bike rodeo organized by the police department, a safety obstacle course run by the South Shore Fire Department, equipment displays, live music, free food samples, vendor booths and raffles. Visit www.mtpleasantwi.gov Meanwhile, the annual Rochester Day in the Country runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the village. The day starts with a 5k run at 8:30 a.m. from Case Eagle Park. Registration is $25. (www.silvercirclespotsevents.com/Rochester-5k) Then, you and your family can enjoy an arts and crafts fair, a car show, petting zoo, wagon rides, live music and a pie auction.
Brews at the Zoo. It’s time again for one of the Midwest’s leading beer festivals. Great Lakes Brew Fest (GLBF) is 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Racine Zoo, 2131 N. Main St. The event, open to participants age 21 and older, features unlimited samples from 400 craft and specialty brewers of beer, hard cider and mead. This year’s theme is “Walk and Talk Like a Pirate” with prizes awarded for the best costumes. Take in music performances by Lynette and the Rock Daddies and the famous Kilties drum and bugle corps. Tickets are $49 – a designated driver pass is available at $15. GLBF is expected to sell out again this year, so don’t delay. Visit www.greatlakesbrewfest.com
Live on stage. Choose from two comedies this weekend. Over Our Head Players opens its 2015-16 season on Friday with a send-up of 1950s kitsch called “Five Lesbians Eating Quiche.” Performances are Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Oct. 4 at the Sixth Street Theatre, 316 Sixth St. Call 262-632-6802 or visit www.overourheadplayers.org for tickets.
