Mount Pleasant police say an 18-year-old woman is accused of passing counterfeit $100 bills at Walmart, and because she missed her court date Thursday, a warrant has been issued for her arrest.
Asha Crawford, of Milwaukee, was supposed to be charged Thursday in Racine County Circuit Court with two felony counts of forgery which each carry a sentence of up to six years in prison and/or fines up to $10,000.
According to the criminal complaint, police were called to Walmart Oct. 14, 2014 for a report of two women on Oct. 11 who were each using two $100 bills later determined to be counterfeit because they all had the same serial number. The U.S. Mint issues currency with individual serial numbers. Crawford was seen in surveillance video purchasing a wireless router, a shirt and shoes.
Police say investigators determined that Crawford and the other woman also passed fake bills at Walmarts in Huntley and Elgin, both in Illinois. Surveillance video from those stores confirmed the pair were traveling in the same rental car, and the vehicle’s GPS records list visits to stores in those towns on October 11 and 12, 2014.
Crawford was in the custody of the Schaumburg, IL, Police Department on October 12, 2014. Photos from her arrest and from the Illinois Walmart stores confirmed Crawford’s identity, the complaint reads.
Online court records list Crawford as a no-show at her court appearance in Racine County and that a recommendation for a warrant for her arrest be issued.
