Drivers who regularly travel I-94 in either direction should have a smoother ride come 5 a.m. Saturday: three lanes of traffic will be open in both the north- and southbound lanes.
It’s been a long few months of diverted traffic while construction crews took down and replaced the southbound overpass of I-94 at Highway 20 as part of the multi-year, $1.7 billion expansion of the expressway between downtown Milwaukee and the Illinois state line.
The southbound lanes at Highway 20 were diverted earlier this year to the northbound overpass while the south overpass was taken down for total reconstruction. The same work was done on the northbound lanes last year.
Final grading and other miscellaneous work will cause intermittent closures in the coming weeks, but the project is on time and expected to fully wrap up still this fall.
