A Racine man was sentenced to 40 years in prison after he plead guilty to first degree reckless homicide in the death of three-year-old Hunter Wise.

Marcus Johnson, 26, pleaded guilty in August to abusing Hunter at a residence in Mount Pleasant in 2013 by punching him, burning him and dipping his buttocks in water so scalding it caused the boy’s skin to fall off.

The Racine County Medical Examiner determined Wise died of trauma as a result of the abuse.

Racine County Circuit Court Judge Michael Piontek also sentenced Johnson to 10 years of extended supervision after he serves his prison sentence.

“I asked for the max…he got the max initial confinement,” said Rich Chiapete, Racine County District Attorney’s Office. “This is one of those unfortunate cases where there is nothing we can do to make things right for the victim’s family.”

Johnson is not the boy’s father, and Wise’s mother was not home at the time of the incident.
