At least two Racine families are being housed by the American Red Cross until after Christmas after a fire Saturday evening caused too much damage to their 6th Street duplex.
Racine Fire Department Lt. Scott Scorce said in a written release that crews were called at 7:01 p.m. Saturday to a home in the 1800 block of 6th Street. Multiple calls to 911 reported dark smoke and flames showing, and when firefighters arrived on scene they found flames inside and out.
The fire was brought under control and extinguished. One firefighter suffered minor injuries; he was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released. The release does not say for what kind of injuries the firefighter was treated.
“The majority of the fire damage was contained to the first floor with exterior fire extending to the roof,” Scorce wrote.
No one was home at the time of the fire. Those residents are unable to live in the home and are being housed by the American Red Cross until after Christmas.
The fire caused $25,000 damage to the home and $7,000 to the contents inside; it remains under investigation.
