A woman from the Bronx stole three iPhones, defrauding a Mount Pleasant woman and the local AT&T Store.
Valchierina M. Alvarez, 22, is charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office with felony personal identity theft for financial gain and felony theft by false representation for the August incident. If convicted, she could be sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison.
Police began investigating the incident on Aug. 18, when AT&T employees said a woman had presented a counterfeit identification card and then purchased three iPhones worth $2,749.97, with only a $200 down payment required.
The woman whose ID was used later called the store about the purchase on her account.
Alvarez was arrested in Madison on Aug. 16, where she was suspected of committing the same crime there. She was arrested while trying to open phone lines and purchase phones under someone else’s name. When she was arrested, Madison police found a business card from the Mount Pleasant AT&T Store.
Alvarez has an ongoing case in Dane County in addition to the new case here.
