Zoo animals, a Danish celebration, dancing and some beautiful Christmas ornaments are all on tap in Racine County this weekend. Try these suggestions from Real Racine.
Animals, animals. Winter of Wonder is going on every weekend this month at the Racine Zoo, 2131 N. Main St. Each weekend event includes animal chats about the featured cold weather animals, crafts, snactivities and specials at the zoo’s Max and Jenny’s Grill. This Saturday and Sunday features Emperor Penguins and you can also see the reindeer who are here for the holiday season. The zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults, $3.50 for seniors and $3 for kids ages 3 to 15. For details, visit www.racinezoo.org
A holiday story. Don’t miss the holiday musical “Mrs. Claus and the Littlest Reindeer” at Apple Holler Farm, 5006 S. Sylvania Ave., Yorkville. The final weekend performances are at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. After the show, kids and adults can enjoy holiday cookies, a holiday-themed craft, a ride on the Candy Cane Express and a visit with a real reindeer. Admission is $8. Celebrate the Danish way. A Racine heritage experience is on the way Friday with “Christmas in the Court of the Danish King.” The Belle Ensemble vocal chamber music group will perform music that was written for the King of Denmark in the late 1500s as well as music written by Danish composers. The program starts at 7 p.m. at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 3319 Washington Ave. Free admission; donations accepted.
Holiday dancing. The Academy of Dance Holiday Spectacular is at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Park High School auditorium, 1901 12th St., Racine. Students of all ages will perform a variety of dance from ballet to hip-hop. Admission at the door is $10 adults; $8 seniors and kids. Details at 262-221-5814.
Beauty at RAM. You’ll want to visit the Racine Art Museum (RAM), 441 Main St., for some holiday beauty before the end of the year. Art of Adornaments is RAM’s annual handmade ornament competition. This year’s competition features a record-breaking 74 entries created by artists from Wisconsin, Colorado, Illinois, and Indiana. Also at RAM is the spectacular Holiday Tree that is covered with blown glass ornaments from the collection of the late Emile Mathis. The ornaments exhibition and tree are on display through Dec. 30. RAM is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 12 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Visit www.ramart.org
