Caledonia may not be the mecca for seeing Bald Eagles now, but a few years ago they were rarely seen in the area and that seems to have changed.
Erin Fleming, a Racine County Eye reader, snapped this photo on Monday that shows this Bald Eagle perched in her backyard near Charles Street.
Eight years ago, Nancy Carlson, a naturalist with the River Bend Nature Center, said she never saw any Bald Eagles in the area, but she’s spotted several five or six times in Racine County. One of them likes to perch in a tree just north of River Bend.
“I see quite a few now and they are probably making a comeback in the area,” Carlson said.
The number of Bald Eagles had dropped significantly because they were impacted by an insecticide called DDT, which made the egg shells fragile.
