Boy hospitalized after being struck by car**Updated Dec. 23, 2015

Mount Pleasant police say they have a 34-year-old Racine man in custody facing misdemeanor hit-and-run charges after he hit a 14-year-old boy on Washington Avenue Tuesday morning.

The boy suffered non life-threatening injuries after being struck by a car at 7:05 a.m. Tuesday and was transported to Wheaton Franciscan St. Mary’s where he was treated and released. Officers say he is recovering at home now.

The boy was crossing Highway 20 southbound at Oakes Road through stopped traffic when the driver of a teal colored car — traveling eastbound — passed several cars on the right shoulder and struck the boy. He was taken by rescue workers with the South Shore Fire Department to the hospital.

The suspect in the hit and run crash stopped briefly, but then left the area traveling eastbound. Interviews with witnesses at the scene and a tip received at 4 a.m. Wednesday led to the arrest of the male driver.
