A Racine man was growing marijuana in a second-floor bedroom, according to court records, an operation discovered after someone doing drugs in the home became paranoid, fled and was hit by a car.
Steven L. Sheppard, 19, is charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office with manufacturing marijuana and maintaining a drug trafficking place. He is due in court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.
According to court records:
Police went to the 1600 block of West Boulevard on Saturday, to investigate a suspected marijuana growing operation there. When officers arrived, Sheppard cooperated. He said that afternoon he had been at the home with three friends, when one of them began “freaking out.”
Sheppard said they tried to calm the person down, but he eventually left the house and ran into West Boulevard, where he was struck by a vehicle. Officers came to help the person who had been struck, and while there, noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the house. They then prepared a search warrant.
During the search, police found several plants, weighing more than 3,000 grams. They also found a digital scale, florescent bulbs, cords, soil, fertilizer and other accessories which would support a growing operation.
