To avoid spending Christmas in jail, Mount Pleasant Police allowed a pregnant woman — who had several unpaid tickets and warrants for her arrest — to make several phone calls to friends and relatives to get the money together, but she ended up fleeing from police.
Jeaniqua Brumby, 25, of Mount Pleasant, was charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office with second-degree recklessly endangering safety, eluding a police officer, escape, obstructing a police officer, and four misdemeanor counts of bail jumping.
If convicted of all charges, Brumby faces up to 18 years in prison and fined up to $95,000.
According to the criminal complaint, Brumby locked her keys in the car after shopping at Piggly Wiggly, 5201 Washington Ave., and called the police for help at . By the time Mount Pleasant Police arrived, another person had unlocked Brumby’s car, but police learned that she had warrants for her arrest. Because she was pregnant and it was near Christmas, officers allowed the woman to try to arrange payment for the warrant so she didn’t have to spend Christmas in jail.
After trying to make several calls in her car, Brumby took off and the officer — holding on to the driver’s side door — ordered her to stop. But she continued driving and the officer let go. Getting into his squad car, he chased Brumby out of the parking lot where she crashed into a curb near Roosevelt Avenue.
Brumby fled the scene and a man delivering pizzas told the officer that Brumby ran towards the Scrub-a-Dub car wash. The officer located Brumby trying to open the door to the business. Taking her into custody, the officer realized Brunby was bleeding from the head.
