That cool, new drone you unwrapped last week and have been zipping around your back yard must be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration’s Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS)Â or you could face a hefty fine.
Technically, all drones must be registered before they’re flown outdoors, a story from FOX 6 Now reads, after 
the FAA passed new regulations for drone owners effective Dec. 21.
Owners who owned drones prior to Dec. 21 have until Feb. 19, 2016 to register their UAS. Online registration is available for all drone owners who operate UAS that weight less than 55 pounds and only use them for personal/recreational use.
Only U.S. citizens and/or legal residents are allowed to own drones.
Registration is only $5 while the fines for not registering a drone can come to $27,000. Anyone registering their UAS by Jan. 20 will have their $5 fee refunded, the FAA website reads.
