A correctional officer working at the Racine County Jail was beaten by an inmate and the inmate is now facing additional felony charges.
Isaha Walker, 23, of Racine, was charged with two counts of battery, resisting an officer and disorderly conduct. If convicted of all charges, Walker faces up to 13 years in prison and/or fined up to $31,000.
According to the criminal complaint, Walker was being held at the Racine County Jail on charges from three separate cases of burglary, disorderly conduct, theft and bail jumping.
At 6:40 p.m. Jan. 1, a correctional officer noticed that Walker was about to fight a correctional worker in one of the day rooms that he was supervising. The correctional officer ordered the worker to come towards him while he left the officer pod area. Walker prevented the door from closing as the officer tried to close the door and attempted to reach for the officer’s taser.
The correctional officer used his electronic control device, or Taser, on Walker and struck him hard enough to push him back to shut the door. But Walker only stepped back a few steps and he charged towards the correctional officer. Walker punched the man several times and he fell to the floor. Hurting his arm, the man became disoriented as Walker continued to hit the man.
The man was then able to use his other arm to reach his Taser and another correctional officer came to help. Both correctional officers then used their Tasers on Walker, who started to comply to officers orders.
The correctional officer — who suffered from bruises, cuts to his eye, and a swollen shoulder — was taken to Wheaton Franciscan Emergency Room for treatment.
Walker is expected to have a preliminary hearing on the new charges at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 13.
