A Sturtevant woman lost her three dogs after a fire started in her home late Friday night and caused $50,000 in damage.

The Sturtevant Police South Shore Fire Departments were dispatched at 10:52 p.m. to a home in the 3500 block of Highway H for a report of heavy smoke filling a home. When crews arrived at 10:59, they observed smoke throughout the house and a fire burning in the kitchen.Jan 8 Highway H fire

By 11:14 p.m. the fire was under control, and the single woman who lives there was able to get out on her own. She was not injured but did suffer some breathing difficulties because of the smoke, so rescue transported her to Wheaton Franciscan in Franklin for treatment.

The woman’s three dogs did not make it out of the house.

SSFD Battalion Chief Steve Salvo said in a written release the cause of the fire is under investigation but does not appear to be suspicious.

The kitchen sustained the most damage from fire, heat, smoke and water. Salvo estimates the damage at about $50,000 and said the home is uninhabitable at this time.
