The record-breaking Powerball jackpot of $1.5 billion has people talking about what they’d do with the money if they won. When we asked Racine County Eye readers what they’d do with their Powerball winnings if their numbers were pulled, most people included a list of community organizations and/or ideas that would benefit if they won.

Here’s a sample of what folks had to say:

Kara Brennan: Donate to multiple places in Racine: My church, the school district with strict guidelines on what the money would be used for, Racine Coalition Against Human Trafficking, HALO, YMCA, Police Department, Racine City Parks and Rec, RAMAC, Riverbend, Eco Justice Center, the Alliance for the Great Lakes….just to name a few! I’d also hire a lawyer, put the rest into a trust.

Jenny Ann: Help all the single mothers/fathers get out of the homeless shelter and off the streets.

Dave Lui: I’d buy the Zahns building. I’d buy it and make some stuff happen downtown. Go carts, Sky Zone-type trampoline park, an indoor skate park for boards and mountain bikes. Vegas style nightclub on top floor that would draw visitors here on weekends mainly. Free parking would be offered. I’d figure the parking out somehow or it wouldnt work.

Kathy Holley Causes near and dear to my heart: Educational scholarships to invest in generations to come (with emphasis on Racine, my hometown, and UW–Platteville); a cat and kitten facility for the Wisconsin Humane Society; the Racine Public Library so they could create a maker space; grants for public schools and public school teachers; my church; research for breast cancer, macular degeneration, and Parkinson’s disease; Girl Scouts; the Museum of Ceramics in East Liverpool, Ohio; Harvest Outreach; HALO … and so on! Yes, I have thought about this quite a bit!

Connie L Bowen: I would buy the old Racine Steel place, and put up tiny houses for Vets.

Bonnie Roth: Buy vests for as many K9 Officers as possible. Also, no vet in Racine would be homeless again!

Gordon Roberts: Invest in Racine County Eye; it’s worthy of some of my money if I win.
