Racine County SheriffAn Iron Skillet waiter cost the restaurant thousands of dollars when he gave away free meals, according to court records, walking off with the cash customers were using to pay the bill.

Korey R. Hintz, 23, of Union Grove, is charged with theft in a business setting and possession of a controlled substance, after the restaurant uncovered his reported scheme earlier this month.

Racine County Sheriff‘s deputies were sent to the Iron Skillet, 717 S. Sylvania Ave., in Yorkville on Friday, after a manager reported Hintz was suspected of stealing. Other employees had reported someone was giving out half-price dinners, and when the manager checked the computer records discovered problems with Hintz’s transactions.

Several bills had been adjusted down, using a $2 off button, until the bill was zeroed out. Then, Hintz would create an “extra charge” for O&H Bakery items to even out the bill. The Iron Skillet then had to pay the bakery for the add-on item.

The manager said Hintz only did this for bills paid in cash. The manager went through records going back to June 2015 and discovered $4,743.37 had been taken.

Hintz reportedly admitted to deputies that he had been stealing from the restaurant. During a pat-down, the deputies found a pill bottle containing three pills of dextroamphetamine. Hintz said he learned how to take the cash from another employee who had been fired for doing it.

Hintz is due in court next month for a preliminary hearing.
