Caledonia may be getting a new village hall.
A special board meeting will be held to present the plans to village trustees at 6 p.m. Monday at the East Side Community Center, 6156 Douglas Ave.
The Village Board bought 23.6 acres next to Crawford Park in April and hinted then that it might look at building a new Village Hall. Since then a Village Hall Building Committee has been meeting to talk about the issue. Members of the committee plan to outline the status of the village’s existing facilities, go over plans for the new hall, and discuss how the proposed plans will be financed at the meeting.
If the project is approved by the Village Board, the building would replace the current village hall. The designs would include a municipal courtroom.
Caledonia residents are also invited to an open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 27 to see the existing village hall, 6922 Nicholson Rd.
Discussion has been brewing on whether the Village should repair the Village Hall or build a new one for years.
The building was constructed in 1953 when the Village was a Town. In 2013, the Village Hall had a leaky roof, insufficient work space and is not being handicap accessible. The Village voted to repair the roof then, but the work space has continued to be insufficient as the village has grown.
