A 28-year-old Racine man was injured, but released from the emergency room at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare-All Saints Tuesday morning after he crashed the car he was driving into a school bus.
Cited for inattentive driving and not having car insurance, the man was driving his car at about 50 mph when it crashed into a Durham School Services bus that was stopped on the road with its red lights flashing and stop sign arm out. The bus driver had just picked up a student at 7:59 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 20 near Highway V, said Sgt. Paul Maccari, of the Mount Pleasant Police Department.
“The bus was in the right lane and the car was also westbound just behind the bus,” Maccari said. “He was not paying attention and ran into the back-end of the bus going 50 to 55 mph. Thankfully there were no serious injuries because the air bags went off and seat belts were used.”
The entire front end of the car was pinned under the bus and the back-end of the bus was lifted up.
“While the man didn’t ‘walk away,’ from the crash, he was treated and released with minor injuries,” Maccari said.
The road was shut down for about 20 minutes until traffic could be diverted around the crash, but the entire road was opened up at 10:36 a.m.
