It’s a fine weekend to take in some art, enjoy music or try your luck – all in Racine County. Real Racine has some great ideas for you.
What happens in Vegas. The Racine Founders Rotary Club invites you to an evening of Las Vegas-style entertainment at Vegas Night from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Festival Hall, 5 Fifth St. You can try your luck at table games, see Elvis, get married in the faux wedding chapel, participate in auctions and raffles and have a chance to win a trip to Vegas and $500 cash. Admission is $5 per person and includes $100 in fun money. There is also a cash bar and food.
Rock and jazz. The 10-piece rock/jazz band, Yesterday’s Children, entertains from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at Preservation Hall, 740 Lake Ave., Racine. The group promises music of the great “horn bands” of the 1960s and ‘70s like Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears. Advance admission is $8 per person or $15 per couple. Tickets are available at the Lakeshore Conservatory, Schmitt Music and Copycat Music. Admission at the door is $10 per person. The concert is sponsored by veterans group Southern Wisconsin All-Airborne Chapter.
Hot, hot, hot! Sample some of the best chili for miles around at the Winter Festival Chili Cookoff from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Roma Lodge, 7130 Spring St., Mount Pleasant. A team of celebrities will judge the chili entries and visitors will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite. Trophies will be awarded to the top three chili cooks. There is also a 50/50 raffle, silent auction and music by the Lunch Money Bullies from 7 to 11 p.m. Admission is $10. It’s presented by the South Shore Firefighters Charities and Roma Lodge. Proceeds will benefit the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin Charitable Alliance for Fire Safety.
See some art. The two-day Against the Grain Group Art Show features artists who work in wood. It’s presented by the Racine Arts Council and Nu-Wood Cabinets, 1906 Melvin Ave. The show is a bit off the beaten path just off Mount Pleasant Street on Racine’s north side. It includes a performance by REAL School band members, a student artist exhibition and a fundraiser for Lonely Instruments Need Kids (LINK). Show hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 12 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
New at RAM. Racine’s Downtown treasure – the Racine Art Museum, 441 Main St. – presents two new exhibitions starting Sunday. “California Dreamin’’ features the works of the late Mark Adams and the late Frank Lobdell who produced colorful compositions. “Paper/Plastic: Contemporary Adornment” is art jewelry produced with the very creative use of nontraditional paper products and plastics. These new shows can be seen from 12 to 5 p.m. Sunday. They will be on display through June 5. Visit www.ramart.org
