A 22-year-old Racine man is being held in the Racine County Jail on $100,000 cash bond after police say he got into an argument with his brother and stabbed him in the neck while two young children were present.

Samuel Valdez was charged Friday in Racine County Circuit Court with one felony count each of first degree Samuel Valdezintentional attempted homicide and second degree recklessly endangering safety, both as domestic abuse incidents. If convicted, he faces up to 70 years in prison and/or up to $25,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, Valdez and his brother were arguing Thursday “as they always do,” according to a witness, when Valdez went to the kitchen to retrieve a long hunting knife. He swung the knife at his brother, but the man blocked the first blow, which resulted in a cut to his cheek. The second swing cut the man’s neck just below his right ear.

Police say the second swing resulted in a 3-inch long laceration that required stitches and that the fight took place in front of two small children, ages 3 and 2. A witness who was present during the incident wrestled the knife away from Valdez and gave it to police.

Valdez was ordered to surrender a DNA sample as a condition of his felony arrest. He will next be in court Feb. 24 for his preliminary hearing.
