Juanita Chavez has a ready smile and an easy laugh, and you wouldn’t know it from looking at her work, but until she started attending Racine Alternative Education, she’d never taken an art class.

But now, her work has been chosen for the annual Racine Unified School District exhibit at the Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts. You can see Chavez struggle with the pride she feels in her work, and she’s quick to throw credit to her teacher, Megan Goers.

“I needed an art credit so I had to take my first class … I came back for more classes because of Ms. Goers Juanita Chavez - Racine Alternative Educationand I did these,” she said, waving her hand over two pieces she pulled out of a drawer in Goers’ classroom at RAE.

**Editor’s Note: This is the second story in a series about Racine Alternative Education, its credit recovery program and the students who attend classes there.
