When Sturtevant’s tax incremental financing district closes in June, village leaders anticipate a lump sum payment of around $1.3 million in addition to lowering property taxes by about 25 percent.

Based on a preliminary “wish list” trustees discussed at a committee meeting earlier this month, we put SouthParkSturtevanttogether a list and asked for your thoughts on how the village should spend that $1.3 million.

Here’s your top three:

  • 30 percent say the village should expand, improve and maintain parks
  • 24 percent say they like the idea of a program to help attract small and medium-sized businesses
  • 18 percent said they want the village to hire more police officers and increase their salaries to make them more commensurate with neighboring communities

Other choices included re-starting the Sturtevant recreation program; creating an historic district with appropriate signage; bringing Village Hall into the 21st century; and developing a community development loan program to help homeowners with improvement projects.

Trustees continue to talk about the most effective way to use the payment, and residents are welcome to join the conversation. The continual committee meetings are scheduled on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 6 p.m. at Village Hall, 2801 89th Street. Call (262) 886-7200.
