A woman was charged with child neglect after drinking alcohol and breastfeeding her infant son, according to a criminal complaint by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office.

The 32-year-old Delafield woman was charged with misdemeanor counts of child neglect and disorderly conduct, domestic abuse.

If convicted of both charges, she faces up to a year in prison and/or fines up to $11,100.

According the criminal complaint, Caledonia Police were called for a report of the woman being “out of control” at 7:40 p.m. Monday at a residence in the 2800 block of Sandpiper Lane. The woman, who was holding her infant son, pushed her son’s father. The two argued over her being drunk and almost dropping the boy. The man told police that before they arrived he saw the woman breastfeeding the baby about 30 minutes earlier. Because she had been drinking, he decided to call the police.

The woman denied drinking and initially refused to take a breathalyzer test. After being taken into custody by police, the woman changed her mind. Her blood-alcohol level was .21. She then admitted to having breastfed the baby.

The woman is being held on a $150 cash bond. A pretrial conference has been set for 3:15 p.m. May 5 in front o Judge David Paulson.

The criminal complaint did not mention that the child had been tested for his alcohol level. Racine County Eye is going to follow-up on the story to find out more information.
