Racine police say a 31-year-old man is facing drunk driving charges and other charges after leading officers on a high speed chase Thursday through the south side of the city.
The incident began shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday when officers initiated a traffic stop near 6th and Racine Streets when the driver instead accelerated away from the scene. He drove west on 6th Street at a high rate of speed, passing other cars, but the driver crashed at the base of the hill of Holy Communion Lutheran Church when he failed to negotiate the curve onto Kinzie Avenue.
Police sources tell Racine County Eye there were no injuries except to the grass, and they expect the man to face operating while intoxicated – second offense, fleeing an officer and a slew of municipal citations.
