Acie Dogans, 88, departed this life on April 5, 2016 at Ridgewood Care Center. He was born September 14, 1927 in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. Acie was the son of the late Willie and Emma (Nee: Walker) Dogans.
Acie was a graduate of Washington Park High School “Class of 1948.” During the Korean War, he proudly served as a paratrooper in the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division. He was also affiliated with the legendary WW II “Triple Nickles” Airborne Division. Acie was a member of the local civic organization American Legion Black Veterans Dorrie Miller Post 546.
On June 19, 1954 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Sammie Biles. He was a dedicated employee of the City of Racine for twenty-five years, retiring in 1992. Once retired Acie became an active participant of the Lincoln Neighborhood Watch. He firmly believed community involvement could make a difference in someone’s life. He focused on uniting those around him, instead of the divisive things that could separate us. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who truly embraced the meaning of family and treasured all time spent with them.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of nearly sixty-two years, Sammie; his children: Michele Dogans, Dawn Dogans (Dana) Baylor, Eric (Mary) Dogans, Karen Dogans; his grandchildren (whom affectionately called him “paw-paw”); Tiffany Golden, Taneka Golden, Melissa Dogans, Tori Dogans, Brianna Hunter, Nicholas Baylor, Eric Dogans Jr.; his great-grandchildren: Tianna Hawkins, Xavier Golden, Aniah Cunningham, Vanessa “Nijahli” Hawkins, Yasmine Jude, Amari Dogans; his sister (who affectionately called him “brother”), Thelma (Lee) Finley; brother, Al (Maggie) Futrel and a host of other relatives and dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his five sisters, an infant brother and his step-mother Birdie Dogans.
Funeral services will be held at the Maresh-Meredith and Acklam Funeral Home, on Friday April 22, 2016, at 11 a.m. Interment will immediately follow, at Graceland Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home on April 21 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday April 22nd from 10 a.m. to 11a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests donations in the name of Acie Dogans be directed to the “American Cancer Society.” We ask that all donations are stipulated for prostate cancer research.
