A 31-year-old California man Thursday was assigned a $50,000 cash bond after Mount Pleasant police say he stalked a woman via text message to the point where she feared for her family’s safety.

Chad Grubbs was charged Thursday in Racine County Circuit Court with one felony count of stalking; Chad Grubbstwo misdemeanor counts of bail jumping because of warrants out of Eau Claire County; and one misdemeanor count each of using a computer to send a threatening message and disorderly conduct. If convicted, he faces up to 5-1/2 years in prison and/or up to $32,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called Feb. 6 to a home in Mount Pleasant where a woman reported that Grubbs sent her several threatening text messages, and she feared for her family’s safety. She also said that Grubbs had gotten into an altercation with two co-workers and threatened to kill someone in his text messages.

The original complaint against Grubbs was filed Feb. 18, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was in custody Thursday, and assigned a $50,000 cash bond at his initial appearance. Grubbs will be back in court April 20 for a preliminary hearing.
