Members of the Racine Education Association Tuesday elected new leadership.

Angelina Cruz and Ryan Knudson will take the president and vice-president roles, respectively, after REA members voted for them 253 to 196 against Aaron Eick and Mitchell Middle School teacher Keith Kohlman.

Eick has been president since last December when Jennifer Levie stepped down. Cruz served as vice-president but decided to throw her hat in the ring for the top spot because she saw a growing disconnect between school district administration, the union and the community.

Knudson teaches English as a second language at William Horlick High School.

After the election results were tallied and announced, Cruz issued this statement:

“I’m honored and humbled to have been elected President of a union comprised of dedicated and experienced professional educators. Ryan Knudson and I look forward to coming together with our members, the school board, administration, and the community in order to act in the best interests of the children of RUSD.”

Messages into Eick have not yet been returned.
