Racine police say a 56-year-old man is facing up to 3-1/2 years in prison because he stalked a teenage girl as she walked to and from work.
David Vega, of Racine, was charged Monday in Racine County Circuit Court with one felony count of stalking. If convicted, he faces up to 3-1/2 years in prison and/or up to $10,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, a girl told her stepfather that Vega followed her several times on her way to and from work while he was in a white van and offered her a ride. The girl refused him repeatedly, but one night said Vega was in her workplace and she’d seen him parked outside her home on another day as she prepared to leave for work.
Police say the girl told her stepfather about Vega so the man shadowed the girl and heard Vega call the girl’s name. The man approached Vega and asked why he was following the girl. Vega threatened to sue the man for harassment, but the man called the police instead.
When officers made contact with Vega, he refused to answer questions in either English or Spanish and indicated that he should be taken to jail, the complaint reads.
Vega remains in the Racine County Jail on a $1,000 cash bond. He will next be in court June 1 for his preliminary hearing.
