With Lake Michigan creeping closer, at least one Lake Park resident is taking some preventive measures to keep the water at bay.
Andrew Hartnell brought in a crane Friday to position large concrete blocks known as rip rap at the base of the bluff on which his house sits in Mount Pleasant. Hartnell’s home is one of a dozen village addresses identified as being in danger of tumbling into the lake if waves keep eroding the bluffs along Racine County’s southern-most shore.
Several homes are also in danger in Caledonia, and officials on both villages have requested help from the Army Corps of Engineers.
Additionally, Racine County Executive Jonathan Delagrave Friday declared a state of emergency to open up state and federal assistance if necessary.
