First, the bad news: drivers who travel I-94 and/or Highway K should probably find alternate routes starting next week. Now the good news: work is only expected to last a couple of weeks.
The scope of work will involve lane closures on Highway K as well as a full shutdown of the interchange, a story in The Journal Times reads.
Here’s what motorists can expect, according to the state Department of Transportation:
- Lane closures on Highway K from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both June 14 and 15
- Complete interchange shutdown – including Highway K on- and off-ramps in both directions and the roadway underneath I-94 from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 16
- Northbound entrance ramp closed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 20
- Southbound entrance ramp closed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 21
Drivers are encouraged to exit at either Highway 20 or Highway G in either direction and use the frontage roads to access Highway K, except on June 16.
Crews are expected to work on milling, asphalt paving and base patching, the newspaper story continues.
Other than the Highway K work scheduled this month, I-94 construction is not scheduled in Racine County this year.
In 2014 and 2015, the Highway 20 interchange got a complete makeover as part of the I-94 North-South project. The I-94 project is a multi-year, $1.7 billion expansion of the expressway between downtown Milwaukee and the Illinois state line.
