Mount Pleasant police say a 51-year-old man they believe was highly intoxicated is charged with breaking into a local beauty salon, stealing a number of items and urinating in the basement.
Brett Johnson, of Racine, was charged Monday in Racine County Circuit Court with one felony count of burglary and one misdemeanor count of criminal damage to property. If convicted, he could face 13-1/3 years in prison and/or up to $35,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, video surveillance on May 24 depicts Johnson stumbling toward Angels Beauty Salon, 2221 Durand Avenue, and actually falling over at least once before he reached the building and kicked in the back door. He is seen “rummaging around,” smashing things, including throwing the cash register to the floor.
Police say additional surveillance video from a nearby convenience store also shows Johnson buying beer that he left behind at the salon. Investigators located Johnson at Wheaton Franciscan where he was being treated for overdosing on prescription medication and alcohol.
Johnson remains in the Racine County Jail on a $500 cash bond. He will next be in court June 23 for his preliminary hearing.
