Gypsum plant proposed for Calstar Site

UPDATE:The Plan Commission approved WisPark’s request, which will now be sent to the Village Board for consideration on July 18.

Original story: Beneficial Reuse Management, which makes GypSoil, is proposing to takeover the former CalStar Products building, 2825 4 Mile Rd., to operate a gypsum pellet production facility and employ 30 people.

Milwaukee-based WisPark LLC, the real estate arm of We Energies, owns the building. The We Energies Oak Creek Power Plant will supply the gypsum to Beneficial Reuse Management since gypsum is a byproduct of the coal-making process and can be used as fertilizer on farm fields.

Jerry Franke, president of WisPark, will ask the Caledonia Plan Commission Tuesday to approve a conditional use permit to use the 60,000 square-foot building. The plant expect to operate three shifts 24-hours per day, seven days a week. Construction of the new space is expected to start July 15 and be completed next summer.

CalStar made bricks out of fly ash from the We Energies Oak Creek Power Plant. But it went out of business in November. Wisconsin Energy Corp. also owns We Energies.
