How Mount Pleasant pays for the Highway V sewer and water project is under discussion Wednesday during a special meeting of the Finance/Legal/License committee.
Trustees in March voted to enact special assessment powers over residents who live on Highway V to pay for a new sewer and water system meant to attract commercial and industrial development in both Caledonia and Mount Pleasant.
In a nutshell, homeowners who live on Highway V are being assessed according to how much frontage they have on their properties. Assessment totals run the gamut from a few thousand to the tens of thousands. Highway V residents have been fighting against the assessments for over a year, including retaining an attorney and gearing up for a potential lawsuit.
Trustees Jon Hansen – who lives on Highway V – and Ken Otwaska were elected and incumbent Gary Feest was re-elected in April in part because of their promise to re-open the Highway V funding issue.
