A Racine man tore off his GPS anklet, breaking it into pieces, as he was being booked into jail after a domestic violence incident Sunday night.
Police went to the 1700 block of Park Avenue about 11:15 p.m. Sunday, after a third party called to report Richard McManus was threatening his girlfriend. The woman said they had gotten into a heated argument, according to the criminal complaint, and she was afraid he would hit her, as he had done the day before.
She told police that on Saturday she closed herself in the closet out of fear, but he came in and punched her, then kicked her in the back of the head.
On Sunday, police found McManus in a bedroom, and took him into custody. While being drive to the jail, he swore at officers and threatened them. The statements were reportedly captured on squad video.
Once at the jail, the complaint states, McManus said “If I knew the cops were coming, I would have run,” and once his handcuffs were off, “violently ripped the GPS device that he had on his left ankle, causing it to break into pieces.”
McManus is charged with battery, five counts of felony bail jumping, threatening police and two counts of disorderly conduct. Bond in the new case is set at $10,000 cash.
He was out on bond for burglary, bail jumping and domestic abuse, and had been told not to have any contact with the woman he is accused of battering in the new case.
