A 59-year-old woman is dead after she suffered a medical emergency Saturday morning and crashed her car near the intersection of Highways V and 20.
Mount Pleasant police Sgt. Paul Maccari issued a written statement about the incident.
Officers were dispatched at 7:11 a.m. Saturday for reports of a vehicle in a ditch or a possible accident on Washington Avenue just west of Highway V. Callers reported the driver was passed out behind the wheel.
When police arrived, they found the female driver without a pulse and not breathing. Officers immediately began CPR and used a defibrillator to try and revive the woman. An off-duty firefighter from Racine also stopped to help, and rescue crews from South Shore Fire Department took over when they reached the scene.
Investigators determined the woman was driving west on Highway 20 when she suffered a medical emergency and veered off the road. She drove through the vacant field on the north side of 20 and continued in a northwest direction before coming to rest in a dry ravine.
The woman was declared deceased at Wheaton Franciscan St. Mary’s. Her name is not being released pending notification of family members.
Mount Pleasant police are continuing to investigate this incident.
